Hello! My name is Lily, and my Chinese name is 福林峰 (Fú línfēng). I was born in Jiangxi, China, where I was found on the steps of an orphanage with a birth certificate and nothing else. After a year of being in a foster family, I was adopted at 1 year old, and brought to North Carolina, where I've spent all of my life.

Being an adopted Chinese American has been very difficult for me, even when I was younger. Back then, I knew I was different, but I never truly thought about it too much. It was only when I entered my teenage years that I began to have a racial identity crisis. Growing up in a white family and a mainly white community, it has been tough to find where I belong. I feel too "Americanized" for my Asian communities, but too Asian to be in my white communities. And the creeping fear that I don't look "Chinese" enough for people to know also brings me down a lot. The pressure to live up to the East Asian beauty standards and stereotypes makes everything even harder. I feel as though I don't fit in anywhere, regardless of who I'm with or where I go.

When it comes to making other Asian friends, I still feel very disconnected from them as an adoptee. Of course, we can relate to the stereotypes and racism we get as Asians, but I feel as if none of them can truly understand what it's like not to know their birth families. Many of them come from rich Asian backgrounds and are entuned with their culture, but I'm not, and it makes me feel more insecure. As I've gotten older, I have also noticed the favoritism when it comes to Asians, especially East Asians, making this crisis get deeper, and I don't feel good enough as an East Asian for others to like me.

Hi, my name is Rose. I’m 19 years old and live in Charlottesville, Virginia. I was adopted when I was two years old from Hubei, China. I have two sisters; my older sister isn’t adopted, and my younger sister is adopted.

I was found in the stairway of the radiology section of a children’s hospital by a nurse named Ying. She took me to the local police station, and they put an ad for me in the local newspaper. After a couple of days had passed and no one claimed me, I was taken to the local orphanage, where I stayed and lived for the first two years of my life. When I was two, my family adopted me. My family already had a daughter who happened to be three years older than I, and a couple of cats.

I grew up in a supportive family that was always up front and honest about my adoption. Adoption was never the frontline of our story. People would stare and ask us questions, especially when I was younger. But I was raised in a small rural town where everyone knew everyone. Therefore, everyone knew who I was and was familiar with my story. I was one of the few Asian kids in my town. I was bullied throughout elementary and middle school. Classmates used to tease me about my eyes, fingers, and culture. I knew I was different. I never fit in with the white students, but didn’t fit in with the Asian ones either. As a child, I used to want to dye my hair blonde and get blue eye contacts so that I would look like my peers. But as I got older, I became more confident in myself and my story. I believe my story is special and unique, and no amount of hate can take that from me.

Growing up, I was also grateful for moving to the U.S., but I struggled with my identity and self-acceptance. All I ever wanted was to know who my biological mother was and where I got certain traits of mine from. Personally, I feel that my adoptive parents failed to see my mental health declining from not being able to find my place. They were not the right parents to adopt a child. I did not have any friends or classmates who could relate to me and my identity. Everyone else in my community was white-American, knew their biological parents, and were not discriminated against for being “different.”

As I got older, I wanted to branch out into the Asian community and be a part of a group of people who shared physical traits like mine. When I did, I felt so happy and was welcomed with open arms. I am forever grateful for the experience and for the wonderful people I have met.

Fast forward, I graduated high school early, joined the active-duty Army, graduated college in two years, married the love of my life, do hospice care volunteering, and am entering doctoral school for naturopathy. I currently hold a bachelor’s degree in science of public health from Grand Canyon University and have been doing public health administration/management on the side. My hobbies include eating vegan, exploring, reading, writing, and volunteering.

Hello! My name is Liba Mott. I don’t know much about where I come from, besides being born in Fuzhou, China. I was adopted when I was a few months old (I don’t know the precise date), and I grew up in the suburbs of Chicago as a Jewish Chinese adoptee.

Growing up, it was hard to figure out who I was. I was struggling to balance Judaism, being Asian, and being an adoptee at the same time. I attended a Jewish private school most of my life, where I was always the odd one out. It was hard for me to make friends and accept my ethnicity because of my surroundings. I struggled with accepting my identity to the point where I started to wish I weren’t Asian.

In the Jewish world, it is typically customary to take a year off in Israel and then attend a Jewish college. As soon as I hit high school, I decided to go straight to a public college to connect with Asian people like me and figure out who I was.

I attended the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign for two years, but did not think it was the right choice for me. I then switched to Oakton Community College and am happy with the decision I made. I currently attend Oakton, where I’m studying Fine and Applied Arts to earn a bachelor’s in Art Education.

Although I felt like I didn’t fit in at my Jewish school and UIUC, I was still able to make friends and accept who I am. It might have taken me a while, but I am very blessed with the friends and family I have now. I am supported, understood, and loved. I hope one day I can visit China and explore my roots. I also hope to dig up more about where I come from and start the search for who my birth parents might be. I understand that it is a long and emotional process, but I have my friends and family to guide me along the way.
